Chinese Rice Paper Paintings
Chinese calligraphy and painting is commonly known as Chinese Rice paper, 宣纸 (Xuān zhǐ). This is in fact not made mainly from rice, but from many other plant fibers other than rice. Because of its texture, the black ink and colour pigments work very well with the Chinese brush.
After a Chinese calligrapher completes the artwork on the rice paper, it is normal for the rice paper to become wrinkled, as it is the after effect of its excellent absorbency of water, ink, and colour. In order to add live value to the artwork, you can choose to safe-keep it over decades by either turning it into a scroll or framing it.
Since mounting the rice paper is a very detail-oriented tasks and can be extremely difficult, risky, and painstaking during the processes; it is very crucial to find a reliable mounting specialist (mounter 裝裱師 or 裱畫師). He will thickens the medium and straighten out the creases for a smoother look in preparing for the framing process to take place.
In Frame Sifu, we have a designated mounting specialist (the XX of the Malaysia Chinese Calligraphy Association) to smooth out the wrinkles in preparation for the framing.
